Biking
All Veterans' Memorial Highway (State Highway 96) gently winds through Crowley County, connecting each of our four towns. In addition to its scenic charm, the highway is home to one of North America's top cycling routes—the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail.
The local section, known as the Prairie Horizons Trail, may become your favorite stretch across America’s Heartland. As you travel this part of the trail, you’ll be near the halfway point of the journey. Along the way, you’ll pass through Sugar City, Colorado, where you can stop at the Sugar City Café, known for its homemade cinnamon rolls—a favorite among locals and cyclists alike.

If you're traveling east on the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail, your first stop in Crowley County will be the welcoming town of Olney Springs. This small community offers shaded parks, friendly residents, and a post office, making it a perfect rest spot for cyclists in need of a break.
Just a few miles down the road is the town of Crowley, where you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped back into the early frontier days. As you ride along Main Street, you can see many of the town’s original buildings still standing. Just a few blocks off the main road, you’ll find the Crowley County Heritage Center, one of Colorado’s best-preserved examples of early 20th-century architecture. The center features:
Free public restrooms
Beautifully maintained heritage gardens
An air-conditioned museum
It’s a peaceful and enriching stop that’s well worth your time.
Continuing east on All Veterans’ Memorial Highway (State Highway 96), your next stop is Ordway, Colorado. Ordway offers a variety of local amenities, including:
Restaurants for a hearty meal
A fully stocked grocery store
A tavern
A shaded public park
A seasonal water park, perfect for cooling off on warm days
Just three miles from Ordway are Lake Henry and Lake Meredith. These sister lakes offer:
Free camping sites
Swimming and water recreation opportunities
A chance to meet fellow travelers from around the region on weekends
If you visit during the week, you may even have the lakes nearly to yourself, offering a quiet, scenic escape for rest and relaxation.

Looking for breakfast? Hop back on the Prairie Horizons Trail, part of the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail, and head east to Sugar City, Colorado. There, you can enjoy a homemade meal at a local café—an affordable and delicious way to start your day.
After breakfast, you’ll be ready to continue your ride for another 50 miles or so to the next stop along this scenic portion of the TransAmerica Trail.
